Australian Barbell Company began in 1942 as a hobby in the Moorabbin garage of Mr Bill Pole. A move to Clarendon St, South Melbourne followed after the war. A mate, Roy Langford, manufactured the barbells and dumbbells for Bill at his small engineering business (Roysen) in the back of a mechanics workshop in Black Rock, before moving to a factory in Cheltenham in the 1950's.

Roysen Engineering continued to manufacture for Australian Barbell Company along with machining components for many other manufacturers, including the truck and motor vehicle industries. In 1989 Robert Langford (Roy's son) and his wife Denise, purchased Australian Barbell Company as part of if it's diversification plan. The company evolved quickly and became Australia's leading specialist supplier of weightlifting and strength training equipment.
